Program Sequence Options
All candidates for the Multiple Subject Preliminary, Single Subject Preliminary, and Education Specialist Preliminary Level I Mild/Moderate Credentials follow both the public school and University calendars. Supervised student teaching and internship placements are available in Marin, Sonoma, San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
Full-Time Programs
Full-time programs require a full-time commitment for preparation over a two semester, eleven month period. During the fall semester, each candidate engages in 18 units of professional course work and field experience in schools (observation and preparation), and in the spring continues with 17 units of professional course work and full-time supervised student teaching.
Candidates enter the full-time programs in the summer and fall semesters only.
Part-Time Programs
Part-time programs are designed for adult learners and career changers whose life circumstances require a longer transition into teaching. The program requires a part-time participation over three or four semesters. Courses are offered in the late afternoon and evening. Student teaching candidates are required to verify a minimum of 60 hours of observation during the first two semesters.
Student teaching candidates completing the Multiple or Single Subject program in three semesters, take 7 units of professional course work during the first semester, 11 units of professional course work and field experiences in schools (observation, preparation and occasional teaching) during the second semester, and continue with 17 units of their professional coursework and full-time supervised student teaching placement during their third semester.
Student teaching candidates completing the Education Specialist program in four semesters take 8 units of professional coursework during the first semester, 6 units of professional coursework during the second semester, 11 units of professional course work and field experiences in schools (observation, preparation and occasional teaching) during the third semester, 3 units of professional coursework in a fall intensive course and finish with 12 units of their full-time supervised student teaching placement.
Candidates may enter the part-time programs either in the summer, fall or spring semesters.
Intern Programs
The intern program is designed for candidates who are teaching in participating districts, on an Intern Credential. Teachers who meet the requirements for an Intern Credential can use their full-time teaching experience, in lieu of a supervised student teaching placement, to obtain their teaching credential while continuing to work full-time.
Intern candidates take 8-9 units each semester for four semesters. Candidates transferring to the intern program from the student teaching program are required to teach on an Intern Credential for two full semesters. Intern options are available for Multiple Subject, Single Subject and Education Specialist placements.
Candidates may enter the intern program either in the fall or spring semesters.
