Education Specialist: Preliminary Mild/Moderate Credential


Sharon Gordon with studentsThe Education Specialist: Preliminary Mild/Moderate Credential Program is designed for individuals interested in teaching students with learning challenges. This is a 43 unit program that authorizes you to teach students with learning disabilities, mental retardation, other health impairments, autism, and emotional disturbances.

In accordance with California state regulations, the Education Specialist: Preliminary Mild/Moderate Credential authorizes you to seek initial employment as a special education teacher, but does not authorize ongoing teaching service. You will need to complete Professional Level preparation in special education within five years of the date of issuance of you Preliminary Credential in order to continue ongoing teaching service as a special educator.

Program Details

  • Education Specialist programs follow a transition (part-time) course sequence format.
  • EDUC 5301 and 5056 are Fall Intensive courses that begin and end in the summer.
  • Classes are generally held in the late afternoon or evening.
  • Field work in the schools takes place during the regular school day.
  • Student teaching option, though an intern option is also available.
