Characteristics of All University Supervisors

ALL UNIVERSITY SUPERVISORS FOR DOMINICAN’S TEACHER CANDIDATES WILL:

  • Know the California Academic Content Standards for the grade level(s) and subject(s) for the classes in which they will observe;
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of a teacher candidate’s support team;
  • Suggest a variety of instructional strategies to engage all students in learning;
  • Understand the importance of scaffolding learning so that all students have access to the core curriculum;
  • Have experience creating and maintaining safe and effective classroom environments for student learning;
  • Recommend a variety of ways to teaching reading, writing, and language instruction within various content areas;
  • Recognize differentiated instruction and assessment for English learners and students with special needs;
  • Share subject-specific materials and ideas with teacher candidates;
  • Hold valid teaching credentials appropriate to the classroom/course in which they will be observing;
  • Have a solid recommendation from their current (or former) school administrator; and
  • Meet other specific requirements as determined by individual school districts.

UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR EXPECTATIONS FOR FIRST SEMESTER
INTERNS/PROVISIONAL INTERNS

EXPECTATIONS WHEN OBSERVING

1. Before the Beginning of the Semester

  • Decide upon your classroom management plan
  • Decide upon your grading policies
  • Prepare syllabus for each class
  • Prepare a letter to parents

2. For Weekly Observations (15 per semester)

  • Lesson plan for the day, using Dominican’s lesson plan format (Form #1)
  • Notebook, containing previous lesson plans in an abbreviated form: Part B (all) and C (#1 and 2)
  • Seating chart
  • Form #12B: Intern Activity Log summarizing the weekly meetings with your Support Provider
  • Other expectations: 

3. During the Semester

  • Teaching

a. Plan and teach standards-based units
b. Experiment with a variety of grouping strategies – whole group, individual, small groups
c. Differentiate daily instruction for students with special needs and instructional challenges and for English learners
d. Experiment with a variety of instructional strategies – projects, think/pair/share, reciprocal teaching, literacy strategies, SDAIE strategies, multiple modalities, guest speakers, multiple intelligences

  • Parent/Community

a. Call parents with concerns and kudos
b. Keep a parent contact phone log
c. Attend parent conferences

Univeristy Supervisor Expectations for Continuing Interns

EXPECTATIONS WHEN OBSERVING

1. Before the Beginning of the Semester

  • Review your classroom management plan
  • Review your grading policy
  • Prepare syllabus for each class
  • Prepare a letter to parents for new classes

2. For Observations (6 times per semester)

  • Today’s lesson plan, using Dominican’s lesson plan format (Form #1)
  • Notebook containing previous lesson plans in an abbreviated form (instructional input and assessment only)
  • Seating chart
  • Form #12B: Intern Activity Log summarizing the weekly meetings with your Support Provider
  • Other expectations from your Supervisor:  

3. During the Semester
