I. Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs)

The Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs) are the standards by which a candidate's supervised teaching performance will be evaluated. There are 13 TPEs, organized by six domains.

DOMAIN A. MAKING SUBJECT MATTER COMPREHENSIBLE TO STUDENTS

TPE 1 Specific Pedagogical Skills for Subject Matter Instruction

1A      Subject-Specific Pedagogical Skills for Multiple Subject Teaching Assignments

  • Understands the state-adopted academic content standards and how to teach the subject matter in the standards
  • Designs plans to teach the standards
  • Demonstrates the ability to teach the standards

1B      Subject-Specific Pedagogical Skills for Single Subject Teaching Assignments

  • Understands the state-adopted academic content standards and how to teach the subject matter in the standards
  • Designs plans to teach the standards
  • Demonstrates the ability to teach the standards

DOMAIN B. ASSESSING STUDENT LEARNING

TPE 2 Monitoring Student Learning During Instruction

  • Determines student progress toward achieving the state-adopted academic content standards
  • Supports students' learning during instruction

TPE 3 Interpretation and Use of Assessments

  • Understands assessments
  • Uses and interprets assessments
  • Gives feedback on assessments

DOMAIN C. ENGAGING AND SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN LEARNING

TPE 4 Making Content Accessible

  • Addresses state-adopted academic content standards
  • Prioritizes and sequences essential skills and strategies
  • Uses various strategies to facilitate student learning

TPE 5 Student Engagement

  • Sets goals
  • Ensures active and equitable participation of all students
  • Monitors student progress

TPE 6 Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Practices

TPE 7 Teaching English Learners

  • Applies important concepts about English learners
  • Understands theories, principles, and instructional practices
  • Applies theories, principles, and instructional practices for comprehensive instruction of English learners

DOMAIN D. PLANNING INSTRUCTION AND DESIGNING LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS

TPE 8 Learning about Students

  • Uses principles of child and adolescent development in planning

TPE 9 Instructional Planning
