Leading From Within: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life

 “Leadership is a matter of how to be, not how to do.”  Parker Palmer

Parker J. Palmer is a luminary in the field of leadership. He is known for his work in education, spirituality, and social change in institutions including schools and colleges, community organizations, and businesses. He explores the shape of an integral life as key to sustaining the courage to lead, learning for transformation, and effecting positive social change.

Those of us engaged in organizational leadership, teaching, community service, and social change know the challenge of sustaining ourselves and our commitment to deeply held values and beliefs. As Parker notes in A Hidden Wholeness: “If we are willing to embrace the challenge of becoming whole, we cannot do it alone, at least not for long: we need trustworthy relationships, tenacious communities of support, if we are to sustain the journey toward an undivided life.”

Parker Palmer is the author of seven books, including A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life, The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher’s Life, and Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation. His writing has been recognized with eight honorary doctorates and a number of national awards. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley and lives in Madison, Wisconsin.

Lighting The Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America.

• Kareena Gore-Schiff, Attorney and author and daughter of Vice President Al Gore, has written her first book Lighting the Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America.. She describes the lives of women whose leadership positively impacted our lives. Gore-Schiff engagingly profiles nine trail-blazing women who put themselves on the line to combat racism, cruelty to children, pollution, disease, bigotry, poverty, and to challenge the limits put on women as public leaders. She tells how each of them recognized injustices, embraced marginalized groups, and pushed for reform. With this literary work Karenna Gore Schiff lights the way to a new understanding of social change in the last century and provides a well deserved tribute to nine amazing women who worked hard to make change some much needed change a reality.

The museum is a world-class cultural and educational organization raising the voices and status of women worldwide. The museum is a world-class cultural and educational organization raising the voices and status of women worldwide.  It explores the global history of women and contemporary gender issues serving as a catalyst for positive change. Panel includes:

• One of the most recognizable women of our time, Jane Fonda—actress, activist, feminist, workout guru, entrepreneur, and philanthropist—examines her “life so far”.  As Fonda relates her story, what emerges is a full portrait that transcends the many labels that have been used to define her as well as a cultural history of our nation’s last forty years as her life has woven through our times.

Leadership Dance: Leading & Following on the Dance Floor and in the Work Place
For Dominican Students ONLY

•  Have you always wanted to learn how to swing dance? Did you know that dancing with a partner can help you to become a better leader (and a better follower) in all aspects of your life?
  Learn key principles to effectively lead others in the workplace. This workshop will provide you with 25 tips on how to effectively lead others, both on and off the dance floor. You will learn the basics of swing dancing, while learning how to work collaboratively with a partner, both as a leader and as a follower.
• In addition, participants will learn key principles for how to effectively lead others in the workplace. By applying dance principles to leadership, you will discover new ways to make work teams and collaborative partnerships more effective. The workshop will cover 5 key principles:

• Relating to the Music

Teamwork Tango: How to Lead and when to Follow

• Teamwork Tango is a workshop designed to meet the needs of team leaders, team members and managers, consultants, and anyone who works with others to accomplish their work tasks. Learn how to achieve your performance goals more effectively through becoming a better leader, follower and collaborator, and knowing when to take on which role. This interactive leadership workshop utilizes innovative movement techniques for understanding principles of leading and following in organizations. Come prepared for active exercises and to have fun while learning! 
  The workshop content will cover such topics as:
• Knowing when to lead and when to follow
  Learning skills for being BOTH an effective leader and a cooperative follower
  Communicating with your team members
  Putting yourself “in others’ shoes”
  Relating to other work partners outside of your team
  Understanding and moving with your work environment
  Ensuring all of your people are moving in the same direction
• Yael Schy, MSW is a dynamic trainer, facilitator, coach, and organization consultant known for her creative approach to organizational learning and development. She is Principal of Dramatic Strides™ Consulting, specializing in leadership development, communication skills, teambuilding, and creative decision-making techniques that help people and organizations move forward by leaps and bounds.  Yael has over 20 years of experience as a manager, and has spent more than 30 years as a performer and teacher in theater and dance. She brings a unique perspective by incorporating her theater and dance experience into active communication skills training and teambuilding in the workplace. She has a demonstrated track record in assessing communication needs of both individuals and organizations and in developing innovative strategies that meet personal and business goals.

COURAGE TO LEAD PROGRAM DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA

April 7-9:
The retreat begins 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 7, and concludes after lunch on Sunday, April 9, 2006 at the Marconi Conference Center in west Marin.

• Dominican faculty, trained and certified by the Center for Courage and Renewal, bring the teachings of Parker Palmer to Dominican University of California.  This is an approach to personal and professional development to help individuals reconnect who they are with what they do.  The newly formed Courage to Lead Program at Dominican University of California is directed by Dr. Margaret Golden, Assistant Professor in the School of Business, Education and Leadership.
• The program offers Courage to Lead retreats for persons from diverse professions: education, health care, law, business, philanthropy, religious/spiritual life, and nonprofit and community organizations. This approach seeks to support personal wholeness, professional integrity, and vocational vitality.  The spring 2006 Introductory Courage to Lead retreat will be facilitated by Margaret Golden and Carol Hurtig Casbon. It will be held be at Marconi Center, located in beautiful Marshall California in Marin County.
• LOCATION:   The program venue is Marconi Conference Center, a tranquil setting situated in a State Park overlooking Tomales Bay in Marin County.  Space is limited to 20 participants.
• COST:  $650 (which includes room and board), plus travel. Participants will be housed in single rooms. Scholarships are available for teachers.
