Panetta Institute Congressional Internship Program

This year, we have selected Ms. Darcel Sanders to participate in the Leon & Sylvia Panetta Congressional Internship Program.  Ms. Sanders has completed her Junior year as a Political Science and Psychology major, and she is one of our more ambitious students.  She is the founding President of our new Department of Political Science Association, and she serves as the President of both our Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Society and our Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honors Society.  She is an energetic, highly skilled, mature, and confident young person with an interest in public policy related to the rights and welfare of children.  Her goal upon graduation in May 2009 is to complete a joint Ph.D./J.D. degree in public policy.

Southwestern Political Science Association

Walter Wrigglesworth and Audrey Curtis at SWPSA conferenceWalter Wrigglesworth and Audrey Curtis presented papers at the 2008 Southwestern Political Science Association Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 12-15. Walter's paper was entitled, "From Red to Blue: A Look at the Ramifications of China's Transition from Communism to Capitalism and Democracy" (he also presented this paper at the 2008 National Conference on Undergraduate Research at Salisbury University in Maryland on April 10-12). Audrey's paper was entitled, "Manly Women: A Look at the Effects of Masculine Qualities on Women's Political Success"
 

World Affairs Council of Northern California scholarship winner

Alexandra Cimatu was awarded a scholarship by the World Affairs Council of Northern California, Marin Chapter to attend their annual international affairs conference in Asilomar, May 2-4, 2008.

Model United Nations

In April 2007, five students from the Department of Political Science and International Studies participated in the Model United Nations Far West Conference in San Francisco.

The conference theme was “Reasserting UN Relevance: Defining Its Role in a Changing World.” The Dominican contingent is represented Israel.

The Model United Nations Far West Conference enables colleges to participate in model sessions of the United Nations in an effort to advance the students’ understanding of the principles and means by which international relations may be maintained.

 

California's Persian-American community

In a March 2007 Pacific Sun feature story titled "Behind the Veil," Dr. Gigi Gokcek, assistant professor of Middle Eastern Politics, provides commentary about the role of women in Iran.

 

Project Vote Smart

The Project Vote Smart bus will visit campus on January 30. Project Vote Smart is a national library of information on 40,000 candidates for public office at all levels of government. Stay tuned for more information or visit http://www.vote-smart.org/

 

State of the Union

Political science instructor Alison Howard is the co-author of Addressing the State of the Union: The Evolution and Impact of the President's Big Speech (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2006).

She has also published articles in PS and Politics and American Behavioral Scientist. In August 2006, Alison co-presented “George W. Bush and the Rhetoric of Chief Legislator: The First Term” at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association.
