Occupational Therapy in Healthcare
Occupational Therapy is a licensed health profession helping people achieve optimal independence after illness or injury. Occupational therapists also work to promote health and prevent disabilities through education and environmental adaptation. Jobs for registered occupational therapists have more than doubled in the past 10 years according to the US Department of Labor. Demand for OT professionals is projected to rise by 34 percent by the year 2008 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Occupational therapists work in hospitals, clinics, and schools, and are increasingly moving into community practice.
Occupational Therapy is . . .
- Helping a person learn to cook safely in her kitchen after a stroke
- Teaching a child with autism how to play safely with his friends
- Training a person with schizophrenia how to ride the bus to a job
- Consulting with a community agency to prevent back injuries on the job

Recent graduates are working at California Pacific Medical Center, Contra Costa County Regional Medical Center, California Children Services, Redwood Pediatric Clinic, Marin General Hospital, Kentfield Rehabilitation Hospital, San Francisco General Hospital, Seton Medical Center, St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center. - Exciting internship placement possibilities
Students have completed internships in Colorado, New York, Puerto Rico, and Hong Kong. Local placements include Stanford Hospital, Alta Bates Medical Center, California Children's Services, On-Lok Senior Services, Marin County Unified School District, Veteran's Administration Hospital. - The ability to earn two degrees in five years
Earn a BS in health sciences and an MS in occupational therapy in five years. - A nationally recognized program
Graduates are eligible to sit for the national registry examination, become licensed in California or any other state, and practice nationally and internationally as an occupational therapist. - Excellent faculty
The faculty bring to the classroom extensive clinical experience, teaching expertise, and cutting edge ideas about emerging practice areas. - Rigorous curriculum
All courses emphasize critical thinking, case-based learning, client-centered practice, and evidence-based interventions. - Individualized attention
From academic support for those with specialized learning needs to an exciting honors program, there is no shortage of support for the OT student. Students will also be assigned an occupational therapy faculty advisor who will assist in the planning of their education experience.
