Be prepared for the diversity and challenges of humanity in the 21st century
Dominican University of California's Master of Arts in humanities program provides a forum for you to engage in the conversation about great ideas with other adult learners. You will investigate key problems, prospects and achievements that have defined and expressed our humanity.
The 21st century brings new challenges to our world. Due to advanced technology including the World Wide Web, the world is getting smaller, yet the numbers of people and cultures inhabiting it continues to grow. It is increasingly important that we are prepared to communicate with those who share this finite space with us. This program will help you to develop an understanding of our complex and ever-changing world and allow you to:
- Increase critical thinking and writing skills
- Challenge the life of the mind by taking courses in the humanities including art history, history, literature, religion, philosophy, music, and political theory
- Enrich your personal life and further professional achievement
Graduate humanities offers a 30, 33, or 38 unit Master of Arts programs composed of graduate seminars and flexible units including upper division courses expanded to the graduate level, teaching assistantships, travel seminars, and transferred units. Students in the 30 unit track may choose an emphasis in Art History, History, Literature, Religion, Political Theory, Philosophy, and Women and Gender Studies. The Creative Writing track is 30 units. The 38 unit track is for those students pursuing Applied Music. All students in the 30 unit track will do a culminating project. Students experience and benefit from our dynamic and challenging curriculum and gain a breadth of knowledge spanning the humanities using methods and content of more than one discipline. You will be encouraged to make connections between different areas of human thought, expression, and experience in such fields as art, history, literature, music, philosophy, religion, and political theory.
Our program allows you to combine your career with graduate studies (seminars are offered in the evenings for two hours once a week.) You may tailor your degree program to your interest area and specialize in an academic discipline.
The program is designed to provide life and career enrichment, cultural understanding, and an opportunity for personal advancement and fulfillment. Students who successfully complete the program will be qualified to teach in community colleges and will receive the necessary preparation in library research, critical thinking and scholarly writing skills to enter a doctoral program in a humanities discipline.
