What Can You Do With a Major in History?

History is one of the liberal arts that historically has been defined as the arts suited for a free people, designed to encourage wisdom and virtue. Neither history nor any other major in the liberal arts prepares a student for a particular profession. Instead, you can do almost anything you want with a history major. The skills necessary for the study are highly practical and prized by graduate schools and employers. Recent Dominican history graduates have been accepted into graduate programs at the University of Chicago, University of Virginia, Stanford University, University College (London), Sonoma State University, San Francisco State University, California Western School of Law, and Syracuse University -- to name only a few. Below are some examples of career paths that history majors can pursue. This information comes from the American Historical Association web site at http://www.historians.org/search/ .
