Harlan Stelmach's graduate work in the field of ethics began at Harvard University where he received his master's degree. He completed his doctoral work at the Graduate Theological Union in 1977 in an interdisciplinary program in ethics and social science. A post-doctoral visiting scholar stay at the Haas School of Business in Berkeley contributed to one of his specialties in business ethics. He was the director of the Center for Ethics and Social Policy in Berkeley for five years. He is the chair of the humanities department at Dominican and teaches courses in moral philosophy, medical ethics, and social science and religion.

Martin Anderson was an adjunct professor of history at Dominican from 1998 until becoming a full-time assistant professor beginning Fall 2006.  He practiced full-time as an attorney from 1978 until 1989 when he returned to school to obtain his Ph.D, first obtaining a Masters degree in history. Thereafter he continued a part-time practice until becoming full-time at Dominican.  His field of interest is British Empire, particularly in India and Africa.  His dissertation was on British tourism abroad after the Napoleonic Wars.  Starting in Fall 2006 he will be Program Director of the Graduate Master in Humanities Program.

srpat.jpgSister Patricia Dougherty, OP

MA, PhD Georgetown University

Sr. Patricia Dougherty has taught history at Dominican University of California for nearly twenty years. After teaching ten years in elementary school, she attended Georgetown University and earned her MA and PhD in Modern European History. She received a Fulbright Fellowship to work on her dissertation in France and has been selected for two National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminars (at Stanford and in Chicago). At Dominican, she received the Teacher of the Year Award in 1994. In addition to teaching history, Sr. Patricia has directed the Honors Program and helped inaugurate women and gender studies on campus. Her research interests are the French Catholic Press during the July Monarchy (1830-1848) and women and religion, particularly the beginnings of the Dominican congregation in California in mid-nineteenth century.

Fr. Bob Haberman, Assistant Professor and Director of Campus Ministry, teaches  several religion courses.  He has been at Dominican for fifteen years.  He received a BA in Economics from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, a MDiv from St. Mary's Seminary and University, Baltimore, Maryland, and a DMin. from San Francisco Theological Seminary, San Anselmo, California.  Prior to coming to Dominican, he spent time working in the Diocese of Pueblo, Colorado, and also spent a year of study in archeology and theology in Israel.

Dr. Novak earned his doctorate from the Department of Religion at Syracuse University in 1981. He is currently Professor and Director of the Program in Philosophy and Religion at Dominican  where he has taught for 22 years. He has published many articles and reviews in both scholarly and popular journals, is the co-author with Huston Smith of Buddhism: A Concise Introduction, and author of The World's Wisdom, an anthology of the sacred texts of the world's religions, and The Vision of Nietzsche. Leslie Ross
Professor, Art History
BA Dominican College of San Rafael; MA University of California, Davis;
PhD University of California, Santa Barbara

Dr. Ross is an expert in the field of illuminated manuscripts and medieval art. She has published two books for Greenwood Press: Text, Image, Message: Saints in Medieval Manuscript Illustration and Medieval Art: A Topical Dictionary. She participates yearly in the International Congress on Medieval Studies held in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Dr. Ross earned her BA from Dominican University, her MA from the University of California, Davis and completed her PhD in art history at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

scott.jpgArthur Kane Scott
Assistant Professor, History
BA La Salle College; MA Marquette University

Arthur Kane Scott  teaches social/cultural studies and history courses specializing in non-Western traditions/societies including Islam, India, East Asia, Latin America. He is currently taking the lead in bringing the wisdom of Native Americans to the Dominican campus. He has developed a series of online courses for Berkeley on America/World/Islamic studies. Mr. Scott is very active with the Latino Film Festival and the Diversity Action Group as ways to broaden the Dominican educational experience. In 2002, he was chosen as Teacher of the Year.

MM, DMA Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Dr. Singleton joined the faculty of Dominican University in 1997. For the previous thirteen years, he served as director of the Dixon School of Church Music of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. His performance areas are choral conducting and voice and include recitals and concerts in several states, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. Dr. Singleton earned his doctor of musical arts from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with majors in voice and music education and a minor in music theory. Post doctoral work includes a master of music in music education with Kodaly Emphasis from Holy Names College in Oakland.
