About Marina Hotchkiss
Chair, Department of Music, Dance and Performing Arts
For BFA in Dance students, each day begins with Ballet Technique at 9:00am in San Francisco or 9:30am in San Rafael. Modern Technique, and then GYROTONIC® or GYROKINESIS® classes follow ballet twice a week. Workshop - a course that encompasses repertoire, choreography, improvisation and composition, as well as Master Classes - follows ballet three times per week. In general, dance majors dance about 20 hours per week in course work, and have additional rehearsal hours from September to March for Senior Projects. Dance courses typically end by 2:30pm. Students then return to campus for academic courses.
Improvisation and composition studies support and inform a strong emphasis on individual responsibility and exploration in the creative process. The four-year program offers many opportunities for student performance, and culminates in a full production of student-choreographed work. The LINES Ballet BFA at Dominican program also incorporates extensive study in the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® to cultivate knowledge and practical tools towards maintaining a healthy body while expanding individual movement potential.
