The Ignition and the Mass

Jessica Guda

I may not remember much
About this day.
I may not recall specifics,
What exactly happened when,

But I will remember how
The rocks broke the water in the bay.
I will see the white
Bursting like that hasty match
At night.

I will remember the pinpricks
Of the San Francisco rain
On my skin,
How each raindrop created its
Own mountain therein.

Most of all, I’ll remember
The steady
Dripping of the rain
From the overhang,

The many faces grasped
And stretched by gravity
Only to smack to the pavement
One mass making.
