Learning Beyond the Classroom
The Humanities Department encourages all students to pursue extra-curricular activities and community service. Internships and Service Learning courses are often integrated into the course of study for the selected major.
Internships
An internship is required as part of the Pathways and undergraduate Day Humanities and Cultural Studies majors. Among many organizations, students have held internships at the Marin History Museum, Society of California Pioneers, the Dominican University Library, College of Marin, and the Matrix Parent Network.
Service Learning
Dominican has an active Service Learning program where student learn through service to community partners. Many courses have a service learning component, and community partners include the Canal Alliance, Marin Aids Project, St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room, Community Health & Prevention Wellness Campus, YMCA Youth Court, Marin Abused Women’s Services, and Center for Volunteer & Non-Profit Leadership to name a few.

Travel
Through university sponsored programs humanities students have several opportunities to travel each year and obtain class credit. There is an annual trip to Fanjeaux, France where the Dominican Order originated, and other trips have been to China, Greece, India, Italy, Thailand and Vietnam.
Clubs
There are several clubs on campus for humanities students including the History Club, Dominican Grrls, SPDI (Students Promoting Dominican Ideals), and honor societies. These groups organize off campus trips to museums and conferences and on campus events such as information sessions on current events and social gatherings.
Speakers
Through various organizations like Expressions, the Humanities Department brings outside speakers to the campus. Past guests have included author Thomas Cahill, Nobel prize recipient Shirin Abadi, and the African American musician Linda Tillery.
