Types of Credit

Most courses offered through PACE will enable participants to earn non-academic credit in the form of Extension Semester Units (ESU) or Continuing Education Credit (CEU). These credits are generally used by participants to satisfy certification or professional development requirements for salary* and/or career advancement.

Extension Semester Units – usually associated with courses taken to attain a form of certification. ESU are characterized by 15 hours of contact time per unit, and are associated with a degree of knowledge assessment and/or skills implementation.

Continuing Education Units – usually associated with courses taken for information and non- mandatory skill building. CEU are characterized by 10 hours of contact time per unit, and require a minimal amount of knowledge assessment and/or skills implementation.

In some cases, academic students taking PACE courses may use up to six units of non-academic credit towards degree completion. Students are advised to check with their academic advisor or department chair for prior authorization.

*Participants are advised to obtain prior employer approval for use in salary advancement.
