Dominican Heritage and Alumni House / Edgehill Campaign
Dominican Heritage and Alumni House and St. Catherine Benincasa Chapel
On May 28, 2009, Dominican's Board of Trustees voted unanimously to proceed immediately with the transformation of the historic Edgehill mansion into the Dominican Heritage and Alumni House, with the St. Catherine Benincasa Chapel as the centerpiece of this important project. Work commences in mid-June.
The Dominican Heritage and Alumni House will restore the much-loved mansion, which served as home to generations of Dominican students, into a welcoming home for Dominican alumni and a unique space to celebrate the University's rich history and Dominican heritage. The St. Catherine Benincasa Chapel will provide alumni, students, and friends with a Catholic place of worship.
"On behalf of the alumni, I want to thank the Board of Trustees for approving the resolution to move ahead with the renovation of the Edgehill mansion," said Susan McCue, president of the Alumni Association. "I cannot express how important this project is, and I believe that raising the additional funds needed to complete the project will be no problem."
Funds committed to the project stand at just over $6 million, with alumni contributing more than $3 million, including $1 million from the Arline and Thomas J. Bannan Foundation. University Trustees have contributed an additional $1.1 million.
A "close the gap" campaign will begin in earnest in order to raise an additional $2 million necessary to complete the foundation-to-roof renovation of the 15,000 square-foot Queen Anne Victorian.
Now, more than ever, we need the University's alumni and friends to give--or give again--as we begin to transform the interior, the exterior, and the gardens surrounding this jewel of Dominican.
Trustee Tony Castellucci, who was appointed by the Board to oversee the renovation, will provide monthly updates to the Board's Executive Committee as to the status of construction and fundraising. He will work with Trustee Jim Deitz, chair of the Edgehill Campaign Committee, to close the funding gap. As a clear sign of his commitment to the project, Castellucci made a $250,000 gift to the campaign.
The University received design approval from the City of San Rafael earlier this year. Ten general contractors were invited to submit a guaranteed lump sum bid. The contract was awarded to Wright Contracting, Inc. of Santa Rosa. Wright, founded in 1953, was the general contractor on Dominican's Edgehill Village residence hall complex. The company has an excellent reputation for delivering high quality work on time and within budget.
Planning is underway for an early September celebration for alumni, students, and friends--an opportunity to give thanks to the many people who worked tirelessly through two campaigns to make this dream a reality.
