Items Discussed:

  1. Facilities:
John Kennedy informed us that the facilities manager is planning a dorm walk-through in a couple of weeks and will let us know which areas of the campus will be on the schedule this summer for upgrading. John also reported that the current mail facility will be converted to a nursing lab. The new mail room will be in the basement of Bertrand Hall.

  2. Board of Trustees Meeting:
Trustees will be sending out their proposals for future growth of the University. There has been discussion of building  a Chapel/Student Center on campus and making this a high priority. Nothing is definite yet. We should learn more by mid June.

  3. Security:
John reported that Campus Security has received complaints about noise near Santa Sabina. Paul Raccanello said that the improved spring weather has allowed students to open their windows and take part in more outdoor activities. During the winter rains, students were relatively quiet.

  4. Status of Parent Involvement in DUPC:
Most currently active parents have graduating students. This means that the parents, too, are graduating (from the Parent Council). We discussed ways to get more parents involved in the council. Every parent in the group feels strongly that the council plays an important role in the campus community. Both John Kennedy and Paul Raccanello agreed. Al Garrotto volunteered to draft a letter to parents of incoming freshman encouraging them to participate in the council. We will mail this letter in July and follow up with phone calls to parents to see if we can promote active interest.

  5. New DU Card System:
A new "one-card" system will be in effect in the fall. Students will use this card for everything on campus, including entry into dorm buildings and, eventually, their door rooms. The Parent Council applauds this step toward even more effective campus security. Parents with questions about the card can contact Paul Raccanello at (415) 485-3223 or paul.raccanello@dominican.edu.

  6. Class of 2010:
240 Freshmen are expected for the Fall 2006 semester.

  7. Student Parking:
A committee will form next semester to evaluate on-campus parking. Anyone interested in giving input on this issue should contact John Kennedy at 415-485-3282 or kennedy@dominican.edu.

  8. Graduation Events:
Graduation will take place on Saturday May 13, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. Commencement speaker will be Rev. Cecil Williams, pastor emeritus, Glide Memorial Methodist Church in San Francisco. The baccalaureate Mass will be held at St. Raphael's Church, San Rafael, at 3 p.m. on Friday May 12. The Mass will be followed by the Hood Ceremony at 5 p.m. in Angelico Hall (on campus).

Next Meeting: There will be no Parent Council meeting in June.  Stay tuned.

Minutes prepared and submitted by Gary Gillard and Al Garrotto.
