Below is a list of selected funding opportunities that are available from government and foundation sources. Please contact the ORSP office if you would like further information regarding any of these opportunities.
A. General
1. Digitizing historical records (NARA)
The National Archives and Records Administration seeks proposals for projects that use cost-effective methods to digitize nationally significant historical record collections and make the digital versions freely available on the internet. Projects must make use of existing holdings of historical repositories and be made up of entire collections or series.

2. Professional development for archives (NARA)
The National Archives and Records Administration invites applications for matching grants to support training and education of professionals in archival and historical publishing communities.

3. Entertainment Software Association Foundation
The Entertainment Software Association serves organizations that publish video and computer games. Through the ESA Foundation, the association supports positive programs and opportunities that make a difference in the quality of life, health, and welfare of our youth. The foundation seeks to fund diverse projects and programs that benefit youth. Programs touch on one of the following areas: skill building and personal development; general health and welfare; risk behavior prevention; education; and multimedia arts, whether related to, or applied to, technology.

4. Tellabs Foundation
The Tellabs Foundation supports strategic initiatives in three main focus areas: education, health and wellness, and the environment. In education, the foundation is interested in local and national programs and curricula for engineering, math, science and technology.
• Deadline: Letters of inquiry should be submitted at least four months before funding is needed. The board meets quarterly, usually in Jan., April, July and Oct.

5. The Getty Foundation
The Getty Foundation is part of the Getty Trust, a private operating foundation dedicated to the visual arts. The foundation supports a wide range of projects that promote research in the history of art and related fields, advancement of the understanding of art, and conservation of cultural heritage. Currently, nonprofit institutions can submit applications for Archival Grants. Awards support the basic arrangement and description of important archival collections of art-historical material in order to make them more accessible to scholars.

• Funding: Most grants range from $25,000 to $250,000; however the majority of grants are for less than $100,000.

6. U.S. Agency for International Development
The purpose of this RFA is to solicit quality community-oriented health projects to significantly improve the health status of children under five and women of reproductive age in developing countries with a focus on innovation in delivery strategies for new, underused and high impact MCH interventions.

7. Summer seminars and institutes
These grants support national faculty development programs in the humanities for school teachers, and for college and university teachers. Seminars and institutes may be as short as two weeks or as long as six weeks. The duration of a program should allow for full and thorough treatment of the topic.

8. American Philosophical Society
The American Philosophical Society is a scholarly organization devoted to research, outreach and information sharing. The organization is currently accepting applications for its Phillips Fund Grant for Native American Research. Awards help scholars conduct research in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native Americans in the continental United States and Canada. The organization is interested in Native American culture and how it has changed over time.

9. The Irving I. Moskowitz Foundation
The Moskowitz Foundation was established in 1968 to help people in need regardless of race, creed, politics or religion. Focus areas include: education, health, children, religion, sports and individuals.

10. The Milken Family Foundation
The Milken Family Foundation exists to help people “lead productive and satisfying lives” and pursues its mission through two areas: education and medicine. Financial awards support professional development in those areas; research and implementation of programs to improve the quality of teaching and education available to students; and research that is essential to solving many of society’s worst problems.

1. Earthquake engineering research (NSF)
The National Science Foundation invites proposals for research to advance knowledge, discovery and innovation in earthquake research.

2. Community action for renewed environment (CARE) program (EPA)
The Environmental Protection Agency seeks applications for locally-based multimedia demonstrations to help communities understand and reduce risks due to toxics and environmental pollutants from all sources.

• Funding: $3.5 million in fiscal 2008 for up to 18 awards ranging from $75,000 to $300,000 each.

3. Math and science partnerships (NSF)
The National Science Foundation seeks proposals under its flagship R&D effort to improve K-12 student achievement through projects designed to build the knowledge base for math and science education and serve as models to be replicated in education practice.
• Deadline: Feb. 18 for optional but strongly encouraged letters of intent to apply; and March 25 for all categories except Innovation through Institutional Integration projects, which are due by April 10

4. Student, teacher technology experiences (NSF)
The National Science Foundation’s Education and Human Resources Directorate seeks proposals under the Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program for development, implementation, testing and scale-up of models to strengthen the nation’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics workforce.
• Deadline: Feb. 15 for letters of intent; April 10 for full proposals. For Innovation through Integration proposals, April 11 for full proposals.
• Funding: $32 million for 20 to 36 new ITEST projects, including 15 to 22 strategies awards, one to four scale-up awards and four to 10 studies. Up to $10 million is available for integration awards.

5. Integrated pest management (USDA)
The Agricultural Department seeks proposals for integrated multidisciplinary agricultural research, extension and education activities that address complex pest management priorities.
• Deadline: Feb. 29
• Funding: $1.3 million for the Crops at Risk Competitive Grants Program, which funds awards up to $200,000 a year each for two to four years; $4.2 million for Risk Avoidance and Mitigation Competitive Grants Program, which awards grants of up to $625,000 a year each for up to four years.

6. Wildlife Conservation Society
The Wildlife Conservation Society is headquartered at the Bronx Zoo in New York and works to save wildlife and wild lands. The organization is accepting applications for its Research Fellowship Program. The RFP is designed to “build capacity for the next generation of conservationists through supporting individual field research projects that have a clear application to the conservation of threatened wildlife and wildlife habitat.” The society seeks projects based on conservation science that can contribute to sustainable development.

• Funding: Grants are for up to $25,000. The average grant is $10,000. The project period is one year.

7. Strategic agricultural initiative/Food Quality Protection Act Grant Program (EPA)
EPA Region 9 is soliciting proposals to carry out the Food Quality Protection Act and to support efforts by the agricultural community to “transition” away from high-risk pesticides to lower risk pesticides and sustainable practices in food production. The program supports grants for education, extension and demonstration projects for FQPA transition and reduced risk practices for pest management in agriculture. Proposals for demonstration projects must demonstrate applications, technologies, methods or approaches that are new, innovative or experimental. A demonstration project that is carried out through a routine or established practice is not eligible for funding.

8. North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NACAW) - U.S. STANDARD GRANTS
The U.S. Standard Grants Program is a competitive, matching grants program that supports public-private partnerships carrying out projects in the United States that further the goals of the North American Wetlands Conservation Act. These projects must involve long-term protection, restoration, enhancement and/or establishment of wetlands and associated uplands habitats for the benefit of all wetlands-associated migratory birds.

9. NIH revision awards for studying interactions among social, behavioral, and genetic factors in health (R01)
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) issues this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to invite applications from current NIH-funded investigators to study how interactions of genetic and behavioral/social factors influence health and disease.

10. Support for conferences and scientific meetings (R13)
The purpose of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Research Conference Grant Program (R13) is to support high quality conferences and scientific meetings that are relevant to its scientific mission and to the public health. A conference/scientific meeting is defined as a gathering, symposium, seminar, scientific meeting, workshop or any other organized, formal meeting where persons assemble to coordinate, exchange, and disseminate information or to explore or clarify a defined subject, problem, or area of knowledge.
• Deadline: April 12, August 12 and Dec. 12 (LOI due 60 days prior to application due date).

C. Art and Education:
1. Ethics education in science and engineering (NSF)
The Ethics Education in Science and Engineering program accepts proposals for research and educational projects to improve ethics education in all of the fields of science and engineering that NSF supports, especially in interdisciplinary or inter-institutional contexts. Proposals must focus on improving ethics education for graduate students in those fields, although the proposed programs may benefit advanced undergraduates in addition to graduate students.

• Funding: $1.9 million for five to 12 awards for 36 months.

2. Challenge America Fast-Track Review Grants (NEA)
Through the Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track Review Grants category, the National Endowment for the Arts offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Age alone (e.g., youth, seniors) does not qualify a group as underserved; at least one of the underserved characteristics noted here also must be present. Note that if an organization applies to the Challenge America Fast-Track Review Grants category, it may not submit another application to the Access to Artistic Excellence or Learning in the Arts categories.

3. Access to artistic excellence (NEA)
The National Endowment for the Arts encourages and supports artistic creativity, preserves our diverse cultural heritage, and makes the arts more widely available in communities throughout the country. While projects in this category may focus on just one of these areas, the Arts Endowment recognizes that many of the most effective projects encompass both artistic excellence and enhanced access. Support is available to organizations for projects that do one or more of the following: Provide opportunities for artists to create, refine, perform, and exhibit their work; present artistic works of all cultures and periods; preserve significant works of art and cultural traditions; enable arts organizations and artists to expand and diversify their audiences; provide opportunities for individuals to experience and participate in a wide range of art forms and activities; enhance the effectiveness of arts organizations and artists; employ the arts in strengthening communities. The Arts Endowment is particularly interested in projects that extend the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability.

4. Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation
The Shelly and Donald Rubin Foundation primarily supports the inclusion of art from non-Western cultures into mainstream scholarship display. In particular, the foundation’s interest is the collection, care, preservation, study and display of the ancient art of the Himalayas, with the related goal of exploring the relationship between this art and that of other cultures. The foundation is also interested in supporting research and programs in other areas, such as access to health care; AIDS and its effect on society’s institutions; the celebration of ethnic and cultural diversity, which simultaneously encourages inter-group understanding; and cultural and arts programs, which encourage individual and community identity.
