Fall Funding Sampler
Below is a list of selected funding opportunities that are available from government and foundation sources. Please contact the ORSP office if you would like further information regarding any of these opportunities.
A. General Sciences & Environment
1. The United States Department of Agriculture – Biology of Weedy and Invasive Species
The USDA seeks proposals to provide ecologically and economically rational strategies for management, control, and elimination of weedy and invasive species. Interest areas are research to establish mechanisms determining the abundance and distribution of weedy and invasive species and the impact on agroecosystems; and integrated projects focused on development, delivery, and implementation of ecologically based invasive species management programs.
- Deadlines: Letter of Intent by December 6, 2007; Closing Date: March 5, 2008
- Funding: $4.6 million for awards up to $400,000 for research and $500,000 for integrated projects over two to four years.

2. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
The NIAAA and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invite applications to support research on pharmacologic and behavioral treatments for alcohol use disorders: the organizational, financial, and management factors that facilitate or inhibit the delivery of evidence-based services for alcohol use disorders, and recovery from alcohol use disorders. Research objectives of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) include, but are not limited to: (1) research on medications for the treatment of alcohol use disorders; (2) research on behavioral interventions for alcohol use disorders; (3) health services research on organization and management of alcohol services; and (4) research on recovery.
- Deadlines vary based on grant type:
- Research project grants: February 5, June 5 and October 5
- Small and exploratory development grants: February 16, June 16 and October 1
- Funding varies, with R03s receiving a total of $50,000 a year over two years and R21s receiving $275,000 over two years.

3. Extramural/Intramural Collaborations (NIAAA)
The NIAAA invites applications for extramural investigators to collaborate with in-house researchers at the NIH on key issues they couldn’t pursue solo. The objective of this FOA is to bring together the research expertise that, as a functioning collaborative unit, will address key alcohol-based research questions that would not otherwise be possible by the same individuals working towards similar goals in isolation. The goal of the research proposed by the collaborating investigators should address questions that advance the alcohol research field with respect to issues surrounding alcohol use disorders including dependence and the effects of alcohol on health.

4. Instrumentation for Materials Research (NSF)
The National Science Foundation is soliciting instrumentation proposals under their materials research program (which supports development of equipment and tools to provide new or advanced capability for research, education and training).

5. Centers for Ocean Science Education (NSF)
The National Science Foundation seeks to establish additional centers in a network of coordinated centers that facilitate collaborations and communications between scientists and educators. Centers will foster the integration of ocean research into high-quality educational materials; allow ocean researchers to gain a better understanding of educational organizations; provide educators with an enhanced capacity to understand and deliver high-quality education programs in the ocean sciences; and provide material to the public that increases understanding of the ocean and its influence on quality of life and the nation’s prosperity.

- Funding: $3 million for 12 awards for up to five years

6. The FishAmerica Foundation
The Foundation provides funding for projects at the local level. These projects should help enhance fish populations, restore fish habitat, improve water quality, and advance fishery research in North America and Canada.

- Funding: The average grant is $7,500.

7. The Tiffany & Co. Foundation
The Tiffany & Co. Foundation gives grants to organizations dedicated to the education and preservation of the arts and environmental conservation. The mission of the Foundation's Environment Program is to support organizations dedicated to the conservation of natural resources in the areas of responsible mining, coral reef conservation and land protection. In 2008 a new electronic application system will be introduced.
- Deadline: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for 2008.
- Funding: Awarded grants in 2007 range from $2,000 to $1 million

8. Wallace Genetic Foundation
The Foundation supports a variety of interests including agricultural research, preservation of farmland near cities, plant genetic research, biodiversity preservation and environmental education.
- Deadline: There is no grant deadline.
- Funding: Grants awarded range from $5,000 to $1 million with most grants falling in the range of $25,000 to $50,000

9. Environmental Management Studies (EPA)
The Environmental Protection Agency seeks applications for fellowships that enable students to engage in research opportunities and experiences in environmental policy, regulation and law; environmental management and administration; environmental science; public relations and communications; and computer programming and development through the EPA.

10. The Bridgestone Firestone Trust Fund
The Bridgestone Firestone Trust Fund is interested in proposals that focus on the environment and conservation.

11. Discovery K-12 (NSF)
The National Science Foundation seeks proposals for research on development of innovative resources and interventions designed to advance K-12 student and teacher learning in science, technology, engineering and math.
- Deadline: January 28, 2008 and 2009
- Funding: Full research grants of up to $4 million each over 4 years, exploratory grants from $100,000 to $150,000 a year for 3 years, synthesis projects of $250,000 up to 2 years, and conference grants up to $100,000 for 2 years.

12. Industry/university research program (NSF)
Funding is being provided for long-term partnerships between industry, academic, and governmental organizations to enhance the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science work-force by supporting research and training on topics of mutual interest in integrated settings.

13. Biology research: undergraduate schools (NICHD)
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development supports small-scale developmental biology research projects proposed by faculty members who otherwise would be unlikely to participate in NIH funded research.

B. General
1. The Allstate Foundation
The Foundation supports programs that work to promote safe and vital communities, including catastrophe response; and tolerance, inclusion and diversity, including teaching tolerance to youth, ending hate crimes and alleviating discrimination.
- Deadline: Ongoing
- Funding: wide range in funding amounts, with past grants as high as $1,000,000.

2. May and Stanley Smith Trust
The Trust funds programs that support the disabled, especially the visually impaired; children; and the disadvantaged.
- Deadline: rolling basis.
- Funding: In 2005, $390,600 was divided between 89 awards. The grant award limit is $6,000.

3. The Comer Foundation
The Comer Foundation supports innovative programs making positive impacts on the lives of families and communities. Funding is given to programs in various focus areas including: culture, education, the environment, health, and social services. Support goes to organizations “grounded in harm reduction principle and practice” and organizations actively developing community, financial, and local political support.

4. Google Earth Pro Grants
Google Earth Outreach supports non-profits that share Google Earth’s mission of community service in the following areas: education and culture, the environment and science, current affairs, global development, and public health and social services.
- Deadline: ongoing. Grant recipients are selected every month and applicants are notified within two months whether or not they will receive a grant.

5. Historical and Cultural Planning Grants (NEH)
The National Endowment for the Humanities seeks grants to plan and develop the content of museum exhibitions, library programs, public discussion forums and other projects that engage audiences in exploring humanities ideas and questions. Support ranges from meetings with scholars and content advisers, travel, archives, and drafting program guides.
- Deadline: January 23
- Funding: up to $75,000 for one-year projects

6. The Huisking Foundation
The Huisking Foundation funds programs in the areas of arts and culture, education, the environment, animal protection, and health and hospitals.
- Deadline: proposals submitted in February and August for review at April and November board meetings
- Funding: In 2006, the Foundation awarded $1.1 million in grants.

7. Historical Cultural Implementation Grants (NEH)
These grants cover: consultation with scholars and advisers; final exhibition design, fabrication and shipping; website development; completion of interactive program components; publication costs; publicity expenses; staff training for the project’s interpretive programs; development of teacher’s guides and curriculum materials; presentation and distribution of public programs and related materials; and audience evaluation.

8. African-American Culture Museum Grants (IMLS)
The Institute of Museum and Library Services wishes to fund programs that enhance institutional capacity and sustainability for organizations focused on African-American history and culture. Proposals should focus on one of the following three goals; developing or strengthening knowledge, skills and other expertise of current staff at African-American museums; attracting and retaining professionals with the skills to strengthen these museums; and attracting new staff to African-American museum practice and providing them with the expertise needed to sustain them in the museum field.

9. Kongsgaard-Goldman Foundation
The Kongsgaard-Goldman Foundation supports a range of non-profit organizations involved with human rights, civic development, environmental protection, and arts and humanities. Within these areas, the Foundation favors projects reflecting a deep and broad level of citizen participation and leadership. The Foundation supports grassroots organizations so they can improve the lives of those in the communities in which they live.
- Deadline: Letter of inquiry due by March 16 or September 16.
- Funding: Common grants range from $1,000 to $15,000.

10. The Scoular Foundation
As a part of the Scoular Company, a privately-held agribusiness company, the Foundation focuses on the following areas for giving: children and youth; education; social services; public health; and arts and culture

C. Education
1. The Calvin K. Kazanjian Economics Foundation Inc.
The main goal of the Foundation is to promote a greater understanding of economics. Giving is limited to economic education programs for teachers to widen economics comprehension, and disseminate their knowledge utilizing various media. The application of new strategies for teaching economics through online or Web-based applications is of particular interest to the Foundation.

2. The American Honda Foundation
Grants are provided to institutions in the fields of youth education and scientific education; and for programs pertaining to academic or curriculum development that emphasize innovative educational methods and techniques.

3. IT for Students and Teachers (NSF)
The NSF is soliciting proposals to increase opportunities for students and teachers to learn about, experience, and use information technologies within an educational setting. Areas include youth-based projects, comprehensive projects for students and teachers, and planning for an information technology resource center for students and teachers.

Deadline: January 4, 2008 for required pre-proposal and the first Friday in January thereafter; May 8 for full proposal and the second Thursday in May thereafter.

Funding: $20 million for 14 to 17 awards.
4. Solectron Corporation
The Solectron Corporation funds requests from nonprofit organizations and local school districts. Education is one of Solectron’s highest funding priorities. Of particular interest are programs related to math, science, and technology.
