April Funding Sampler
Below is a list of selected funding opportunities that are available from government and foundation sources. Please contact the ORSP office if you would like further information regarding any of these opportunities.
A. General
1. Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions
Preservation Assistance Grants help small and mid-sized institutions, such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, arts and cultural organizations, and colleges and universities, improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections. Because the organization and the preservation of archival collections must be approached in tandem, an archival consultant should also provide advice about the management and processing needs of such holdings as part of a preservation assessment that includes long-term plans for the arrangement and description of archival collections.
- Funding: $6,000
- Deadline: May 15, 2008

3. Antarctic Artists and Writers Program (NSF)
The purpose of the Antarctic Artists and Writers Program is to enable serious writings and works of art that exemplify the Antarctic heritage of humankind. In particular, the program seeks to increase public understanding of the Antarctic region, including the continent and the surrounding oceans, as well as the associated research and education endeavors. The Antarctic Artists and Writers Program provides opportunities for professional artists and writers to travel to Antarctica --- at research stations, field camps, and aboard ships --- to make the observations necessary to complete their proposed projects. While the majority of award recipients are established artists and writers, the program also seeks to support early career artists and writers in an effort to broaden participation. The National Science Foundation funds and manages the U.S. Antarctic Program, which is devoted mainly to scientific research and education in support of the national interest in the Antarctic. The Program’s research and support infrastructure enables access to much of the Antarctic region for selected Antarctic Artists and Writers Program projects. It does not typically provide direct financial support to selected applicants.

The Small Grants to Libraries program brings humanities public programming to libraries across the country. “Soul of a People” grants of $2,500 will be awarded to 30 selected libraries to present five programs focused on the Federal Writers’ Project (FWP). Libraries will be asked to enlist a lead project scholar with expertise in American history, American literature, the WPA, or the WPA era to help present and plan programs. Libraries and their local project scholars will be required to collaborate with at least one of the following in planning their programs: a state humanities council, a college or university, a museum, a state library with FWP archives, or a state or regional folklife center. An expenses-paid planning workshop will be held in early 2009 for the library project coordinator and the scholar from each selected library.
- Funding: awards of $2,500

6. Russell Sage Foundation
Since its inception in 1944, the Russell Sage Foundation has been directly involved in the conduct and dissemination of social science research. Under its small grants program in behavioral economics, the foundation provides limited support to encourage young investigators to enter this developing field. Projects should demonstrate explicit use of psychological conceptions in the motivation of the design and the preparation of the results. Advanced doctoral students or junior (nontenured) faculty are eligible.

7. NEA Creativity and Aging in America
Creativity and Aging in America is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to actively engage older Americans in quality arts programs. Through this initiative, the Arts Endowment will support exemplary projects in the disciplines of literature and music. Projects must be conducted by professional artists and engage older adults as students, artists, and/or teachers. For the purposes of these guidelines, older adults are age 65 and above. Recent research supported by the National Institutes of Health, AARP, International Foundation for Music Research, and the National Endowment for the Arts found that older adults who actively participated in ongoing, community-based arts programs, conducted by professional artists, experienced more physical and mental benefits than participants in non-arts activities. The research showed that active participation in the arts correlated positively with older adults' health outcomes and their sense of independence, potentially reducing risk factors that drive the need for long-term care. Creativity and Aging in America will focus on the disciplines of literature and music. Activities may take place in a variety of settings such as senior centers, community centers, retirement centers, museums, literary centers, performing arts centers, libraries, schools, and healthcare facilities. Projects must be planned in cooperation with the target population including local organizations that address aging-related issues. Organizations are limited to one Creativity and Aging application per year.
