Library Information

Reference, Consultations, Databases, and Instruction

August 2005

Welcome, New Faculty!

Most of the Library services, resources, and policies can be accessed from our web site, located at http://www.dominican.edu/library.  Check the Faculty Resources section, with online forms for requesting course reserves and library instruction.

Library Instruction:  A one-credit Information & Research course is offered through the Library.  Most students will take this course in their sophomore year as a co-requisite with the English Department’s Research Writing course.  While the requirement is still phasing in, we encourage you to include library instruction in your syllabi for any of your courses that have a significant bibliographic research component.  You can set up a Library instruction session using the online request form that is available on the Library’s web site.

Research Assistance:  Librarians are happy to provide research assistance to your students and to you.  Many students are shocked when they cannot immediately find everything they need on the web.  They don’t realize that the Library has an impressive collection of scholarly resources, both online and in print.  We work with students to get them out of Google and into scholarly resources.  The Reference Desk is open on a drop-in basis six days a week, including some nights.  More in-depth research assistance is available by consultation.

Online Resources:  Alemany Library has over 5,000 journals online as well as access to over thirty different full-text and bibliographic resources in a variety of disciplines. We encourage you to take a few minutes to browse the Journal List and Online Databases links from the Library’s home page.
