Kapamilya

Kapamilya means “family” in Filipino, which was derived from the word “familia” during the Spanish colonial era. This is a very important word in the Filipino culture, as we, like many other cultures, value our families like nothing else.

“Ka” is a prefix that means “to be included.” Familia is spelled as “pamilya” probably because we Filipinos use “pa” in one of our native alphabets (Baybayin) and we don’t have the letter “F” in our language!

Therefore as the name suggests, Kapamilya is not just Dominican University of California's student association about Filipino culture; we are also building an inclusive family. Our other main goals in Kapamilya are to explore the identity, culture and significance of Filipinos worldwide –both socio-politically and historically, to create or develop our relationship to Filipino culture and the Philippines itself, and to unwind from the chaos of academia!

Anyone is welcome to join, regardless of ethnicity, nationality or cultural background. If you have prejudices, leave them at the door before you sign up.

Our Goals

  • Building an inclusive family
  • Exploring the Filipino culture
  • Identifying our relationship to Filipino culture/the Philippines and its relevance to the world
  • Having fun!

Our Activities

  • Filipino cultural games
  • Socials
  • Educational discussions
  • PCN or "Pilipino Cultural Night"
  • Friendship Games

We also enjoy building connections with other organizations regarding Filipino culture.

“Pilipino Cultural Night” is a night of Filipino arts and culture with the participation of Kapamilya members and an open invitation to the Dominican Univeristy of California community.

Friendship Games is a gathering of Filipino Student associations from public and private universities in California and it is hosted by the Pilipino-American Student Association of CSU Fullerton. It is a week end of competitive games, performances and socials and a way to celebrate Filipino-American culture.
