Welcome to the Alumni Association

Speech made by John Kuhr ’86, Alumni Association Board President

As president of the Dominican University of California Alumni Association, and on behalf of over 12,000 Dominican University alumni, it is my pleasure to officially congratulate you, the class of 2008, on your graduation and welcome you into the Alumni Association.

As members of the Alumni Association, we all share a common bond:  The Dominican experience.  Your education, experiences and friendships are the foundation of your lifelong connection with Dominican.  As you graduate, I encourage you to look back upon your fond memories of this special place, but to look forward to its future as well.

Dominican University will always be our university.  We all have a responsibility to foster that sense of ownership, and to insure that those who come after us will find an institution that has been strengthened by our vision, accomplishments, and involvement.  The Dominican of today is not the University that I attended, nor should it be! The mark of a truly great university community is that all members applaud an institution that becomes far better with each generation.  And it is natural that what it is--- is not exactly what it was.  To each generation—its own time, own interests, own future.

The experiences you’ve had at Dominican, along with those you are about to have as graduates, are invaluable to the university.  On behalf of your alumni association, I ask you to maintain your connection with your alma mater and to share your experiences and talents with the university, the students and your fellow alumni.

Your participation will insure that Dominican’s stature will continue to grow.  Our reputation as a premier regional university derives directly from your achievements.  The university and your fellow alumni have a vested interest in your success and you in theirs.

In the words of George Bernard Shaw:  “You have been handed a splendid torch, hold it for your moment and make it burn as brightly as possible before passing it on to future generations.”

Again, my congratulations and best wishes for your success.
